Due to open in autumn 2017, following a rapid 1200 day construction programme, The Mersey Gateway will add vital capacity to the Widnes-Runcorn crossing to overcome congestion and bolster economic growth. A modular, ground interactive, precast concrete ABM Portal System Bridge, installed where the main north and southbound carriageways cross a live freight line, enabled the speedy installation with minimum call on site resources or rail disruption. The Portal System Bridge was manufactured at ABM's Tuxford facility, well in advance of requirements.
Mike Sanderson, ABM's business development manager explained, “The ABM Portal System is ideal for situations like this where off site manufacture, under factory conditions, can deliver consistent high-quality components in units of manageable size that can be quickly and efficiently installed in the available intervals between train movements. The spring stiffness of an engineered soil block creates an extremely strong structure that minimises environmental impact by the efficient use of materials.”
The statistics are impressive: 56 of the three-part portal units make up the total length of 99 metres, the bridge has a clear height of 5.86 metres and a span of 14.5 metres, the structure weighs 3,700 tonnes and was installed in just 15 working days, despite having to work around continued rail operations and the vagaries of the British weather. A strong and solid structure is assured by casting the road deck on top of the portals to lock them in position and enable load and stress distribution throughout the entire structure. The bearing-free design will have lower maintenance requirements during its 120 year design life.
ABM have also supplied a number of other crucial pre-cast elements on the project, these include 6.8 km of bridge deck facia panels, vehicle containment parapets on carriageways and slip roads and protection against ship impact for the main piers where these adjoin the Manchester Ship Canal, that passes under the South Approach Viaduct leading to the main bridge.
ABM is one of Europe's largest manufacturers of precast and pre-stressed concrete structures. The company operates in the UK, from Tuxford in Nottinghamshire and is perfectly placed to service all parts of the country. Substantial investment means that they can produce bridge beams of up to 120 tonnes and over 60 metres in length. The company also manufacture other pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete components and has manufacturing facilities in Ireland and mainland Europe.
